A Place to Be Yourself.
Phase I
Phase I: Laying the Groundwork
Phase I of the Stardust Foundation centers on securing land and demonstrating proof of concept. We aim to listen to elders and work collaboratively with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan and the Grand and Little River Bands of Ottawa Indians as we find a home in Southwest Michigan—land where queer/trans people have lived and contributed to the spiritual and cultural development of the area and that also lies within a recognized climate refuge zones.
This first phase includes:
Land Acquisition: Purchase and begin stewardship of 30-70 acres, prioritizing parcels that allow for future expansion.
Site Readiness: Clear invasive plants, preserve apple trees, and begin ecological restoration in partnership with Indigenous land stewards.
Founders’ Housing: Build or install 2–3 off-grid tiny homes or eco-cabins for founding families and caretakers.
Common Infrastructure: Construct a shared gathering space (e.g. large tent, yurt, or barn), composting toilets, and install water/electric systems as needed.
Legal Foundation: Finalize nonprofit incorporation, land trust framework, and fiscal sponsorship (if needed).
Community Engagement: Begin small gatherings, workshops, and volunteer work days to grow support and deepen roots.
Why It Matters: Phase I proves that a queer- and trans-led, self-sustaining land project is not only possible—but already in motion. It gives us a foothold to grow housing, food systems, mutual aid programs, and long-term refuge for those most at risk.
